I can't give a hot dog joint a perfect score, can I? Yes, yes I can. It's ridiculous. It's delicious. Nathan's dogs, with awesomely ridiculously delicious toppings, and funky combos. Like the Thai dog. Peanut butter, sriracha, and Thai style cole slaw. (That last bit may not sound authentic. Don't. Care. At. All. It's awesome!) The Mad Dog is topped with Macaroni and Cheese. It's not low carb. It's not paleo. Gluten-free? Dream on. But I bet you'll dream of insane hot dogs.

I don't see how this place doesn't result in multiple food born illnesses or how they are not continually shut down by the health department. Everything is dirty. Disgusting. The few things that are cleaned are obviously cleaned with dirty soap/water. If the front, what the customers see, is any indication of what the back looks like I don't know how they are able to prepare food there. I thought I would give them a second try, surely they have adopted some cleaning practices, no not at all. This is not old dive dirty, it is just not cleaned and what is attempted to be clean is not cleaned well. This is what happened when people open a dinning establishment with no clue what it takes to run one. No more chances. I have no desire to become horribly ill.

New York Dawg Pound is a quirky spot in the oddest location on Shawnee Mission Parkway - don't blink as you drive by it or you'll miss it. They focus mainly on one thing: providing classic, creative hot dogs and they do it pretty damn well. This has been bookmarked for a long time and we decided to make the trip out during a heavy downpour. It was very quiet inside, and it almost seemed like they were about to close despite being four hours away from closing. We got the royal rundown of the menu from their friendly staff who was eager to show all that they do. It dawned on me that I have never had a Chicago style dog (not for lack of trying, the two closest spots to me in Chicago were closed each time I went). I was intrigued though, whether it's the neon green relish, the peppers or the giant pickle spear on it. After my first experience I can say it was damn good, but sort of like any hot dog... Good every once in a while, but not something I could eat often. It's sort of a mix of ballpark style dogs and a fair. They have crispy onion straws which are essentially fried batter and salt, and some pretty good seasoning for the fries. Definitely an interesting concept, and a place to check out on a rare occasion.

This place is on the verge of five stars, it does one thing and one thing good. The wife got the bulldog(chili cheese dog) and I got the Doberman(hot dog with sauerkraut and spicy mustard) they were both really good, we got them for take out and service was really quick. The best part of these hot dogs are the buns by far. They fit the dog perfectly and still have that perfect ratio. Whenever we find ourselves driving through Kansas City again this is a definite stop as they have about 15 more things on the menu we would want to try!

Solid five stars for creative/delicious food and great customer service. Told them it was my first time and they insisted on me trying many of the different topping items which helped me decide what to put on my dog. Everything I tasted had a great flavor and was made of good quality ingredients. The fries were great, too w/ their own in-house seasoning blend. Staff has great/positive energy and takes pride in making great food for the customer. Staff have their own fav menu items and can describe something different about the menu. This is helpful since their menu can be a little daunting at first w/ so many choices and ingredient complexities. Buttercup w/ polish sausage, side of fries and a big drink was $7.00 - not bad and hit the spot as far as flavor. This place is one of my new fav grub stops in kc for a quick bite. Next, I'll try their fried Twinkie ;-)

I came here for a quick lunch break. I thought NYDP was going to be da bomb. I only got a stomach bomb. I was so confident in my assumption that I told the cook to give me something that would make me come back. He failed... I am pretty sure that the chili was like Armor Star straight out of a can. I thought that the hot dog was tough and chewy. I have to give it up for the bun though. It was nice. The fries I ate were seasoned well. I also enjoyed the taste of the onion straws, but they were kinda hard to eat. The service was so-so. The man that took my order was nice enough, but the guy that was at the register was less that stellar. The store was filthy with ALL the open table covered with grease, schmutz, and crumbs.

This is the most disgusting place I've eaten in a developed country. NYDP smells like a NY subway toilet, the floors are so gross your shoes stick to them and we saw three good sized cockroaches. I don't know if the hotdog was good or not - I just kept imagining that if the dining area was this gross the kitchen area must be worse! So disappointed because I was really looking forward to an east coast hotdog!

Great dogs...fries were good too...closest thing to Chicago I have here in KC

The best hot dogs in town. Used a Groupon again. We try a different dog each time and have not been disappointed. Great, friendly service. Good, good stuff! Love those onion strings. Conveniently located on SM Pkwy!

I have to say, these dogs are not good. In fact, they're quite terrible. The dogs (Nathan's Famous) were good but the toppings are a mess though. Even the bun was tough and chewy like it was microwaved. The chili tastes like it's canned and they don't have fresh cheese, just nacho cheese sauce made with processed cheese. The veggies looked wilted and old and the whole food prep area looked unorganized and filthy. I won't be returning.

We had lunch here the other day and really enjoyed it. I honestly wasn't expecting too much out of a hot dog place, but I was pleasantly surprised. They had super friendly staff (may have been owners?) and my only negative for the place itself were the sticky floors. Hubby and I thought the portion size was good, we had plenty to eat and we felt like the prices were a good value for what we were served. I can't really make a comparison to a New York hotdog or anything else, but I really enjoyed the Doberman that I had. Even though hot dogs aren't really the first thing I think of when I'm hungry, I would not hesitate to go here again!

Sticky floors, stale buns, using the same gloves to mop AND handle your food. Gross. Food decent (they're hotdogs) cleanliness horrible.

This place really deserves a 2.5. Went with friends over the lunch hour. Arriving just at noon seemed to beat the lunch line that quickly formed. Aside from the food, the staff was a bit unorganized the guy didn't seem to know the toppings on the dog I ordered. Also, as others have noted the floor is sticky. And they were handling the food and the money and going in back without washing. The food was good. Regular fries, a bit soggy, but just cooked so hot. The ketchup is funky in a not so good way. The dog itself was a bit overpowered by the toppings and may have been a bit shrunken, but still ok. The bun was an egg bun, a little big for the sandwich and struggled to support the other items. Food was a solid 3.5. I'd go back anytime and plan to.

  • Crystal M.

Yes the floors are sticky, but the food was good and the staff was pleasant. We got 2 Dawgs, fries, & a drink for $10- Decent price. The manager even came out and asked how the food was which I always like to see!

  • scott R.

So bummed it wasn't better, stale buns/flavorless somehow. If you want a good Chicago dog I'd go to pizza man in Lenexa. Friendly service though, but the food was just mediocre.

    (1)
  • Mark F.

Wow and Bow-Wow. Never thought 2 Dawgs, a side and a drink would fill me up. Outstanding combos and variations on Dawgs. Best fries ever.

I tried this place with a friend because my friend said this place was great. Honestly, I am not a huge fan of hotdogs...so I was a bit skeptical about this place. I mean HOW GOOD can a hotdog place be? When I walked in...first impression was okay...it seemed okay. Then I started to hear, smell, and see the food and my mouth started to salivate. As I waited in line, my excitement grew. It was turning from OKAY to I'm VERY curious to try it. I was surprised by the variety of choices...I believe I went with the KC hotdog (?) (it was hotdog with like bbq sauce and crispy onions and etc). The hotdog was really good. Now, I know I said I'm not a big fan of hotdogs...but I've tried this place multiple times now. It's good and I like it. I like their hotdogs. If I was going to have a hotdog in KS...it would be at the New York Dawg Pound. Still...it is a hotdog place...so that's why it's getting a 4 star review. I haven't had a hotdog (YET) that made me think "I would eat this every single day over anything else". However, as a hotdog place...5 STARS. I know that a store opened up in the Oak Park Mall...I am hoping I can go try it out and see if it tastes the same

Had a Groupon for NYDP and with so many hotdogs to choose from makes it a little hard. I went with the Yankee poodle and the black lab and some how I said I wanted french fries.... oh well. Sat down at the table and was trying to decide on how to attack these dog's since they were so big. I started off with the black lab, the first bite was so delicious the snap of the hotdog, the crunch of the bacon and the pillow soft bun melted in my mouth this continued all the way to the last bite, I would definitely get this one again. The second one, the Yankee poodle was also yummy as described above but this one has a hard cooked egg that made me think of this being almost like a breakfast sandwich with egg, bacon and cheese. I got halfway through the Yankee poodle when I started to get full but I battled through it and finished it. Now on to the fries, I had a small handful but I couldn't take in any more food. The fries were good, they came right out of the fryer and seadoned with NYDP seasoning, they were hot and crispy I would of had more but I was full. I will be going again. Now on the reviewer post from back in the day of a weird or nasty smell in the restaurant, if there was one I don't know but I personally didn't smell anything weird or bad. Come here and enjoy.

Meh. It's a basic hot dog with too many toppings. I'd pass on this place, not worth the wait.

This is the best hot dog place I have ever been. I highly recommend the Polish sausage. All I can say is wow. I found that the staff was very helpful and courteous. There is something there for everyone, even a vegetarian.

I am a dive apologist. I will overlook just about anything so long as the food lives up to the hype. I mean if the Health Authority hasn't shut the doors then I figure I'll live. Even having read a negative review about how filthy this place is I was not deterred. Just serve me one of my guilty food pleasures, let me stuff my face like a pig, and I'll go on my merry way. This is not how things went down. I walked up to the place steeling myself to overlook any unscoured corner. I paused at the door, looked down to gather myself, and saw that the sidewalk directly in front of the door was stained black. I've worked in enough restaurants to know this is not the kind of stain made by foot traffic. This is the stain made by dragging oozing, 75 pound bags of trash out the front door. So I just stepped on years of grease and high fructose corn syrup even before entering. You would think they would at least throw down a mat. Ok, the previous reviewer was right, not clean. But can they make a Chicago dog? Seems like a stupid question, but another reviewer said the quality is hit or miss. This I really don't understand. They sell hot dogs not foie gras. Millions of hot dogs are sold at street corners every week, no brick and mortar store but right off a cart, and almost every one I've had I felt okay about. Not so with the Dawg Pound. All the ingredients of a Chicago dog are preserved but one, so you only have to get one simple thing right: a fresh roll. That's it. That's the secret. What do I get? A stale, crumbling roll. I came so close to walking back in there and asking for a refund, but I could already tell the kind of reception I'd get by the lackluster service the first time around. So I ate it without the roll. Finally, the fries. They are emulating OK Joes fries with the heavy seasoning, which is fine. What's not fine is the price / portion ratio. A lot of money for little fries. To top it off, they weren't even cooked to order. All of this to say, I paid almost eight bucks for a wiener on a stale bun with a side of soggy fries. I won't be going back. My search for a decent Chicago dog continues...

Chicago dog? Fahgettaboudit. This is the only place I know of, in KC, where you can get a REAL NY Dog - onions in spicy tomato sauce and everything. I figured they use Sabrett, but they make their onion sauce in house...even better! The fries are damned good, as well. Can't wait to try an artery-clogging fried twinkie on my next visit! P.S. they're one of the few places in town to not only serve Boylan's Birch Beer (my favorite beverage of all time), but BOTH kinds of it...the red cream AND the OG! Heaven.

This is a GREAT little place to grab a quality hot dog. They serve all beef dogs and they are paired with some very unique combinations. Every time they have a groupon available I am sure to purchase 2! The prices are a little high if you don't take in some type of discount card. The only negatives I have ever encounter after going there more than a handful of times is the sweet potato fries were a little on the cold side. Not something that is unbearable but they would have been very tasty if hot. The workers here are extremely kind and if I would have asked for hot ones they probably would have given it to me. In regards to the cleanliness... I have never noticed anything that is uncommon in a "fast food" type of setting. Maybe a few times the ketchup bottles are a little sticky or the soda machine is lined with ice but this is minimal compared to all of the pros this place has to offer.

I write this with tasty goodness still on my breath. I have lived in the area for 8 years now, and have driven past the New York Dawg Pound since it opened. I always wanted to try it, but I get stuck on the things I know and don't try new things very often. After reading another Yelper's review I thought I should give it a try! I went in today at 11am. They open at 1030 and were empty with the exception of a few other early lunch eaters. I was greeted immediately by the gentleman behind the counter, right where it says "order here". I asked about a Polish sausage and he let me know I could have one any way I wanted it. I chose the Doberman: sauerkraut and spicy mustard. I also decided on a Boston Terrier: a hotdog topped with bacon, baked beans, onions and cheese. I ordered my dogs to-go. While my order was being put together a young lady came from the back of the store to ring out my order. She was friendly and expeditious. In about two minutes, maybe less, my order was put together, and cashed out! This was way fast! Other Yelpers have commented about the cleanliness. I should start by saying that I did not visit the drink counter, or sit down at a table. I did see the flooring behind the counter extending to the back of the shop. It looked old and in need of repair, but it did not appear to be dirty to me. The area where my food was being prepared appeared to be clean as well. Now... on to the good part! Man, these dawgs were awesome! The Boston Terrier is my favorite. Maybe it is the Nathan's hot dog that makes it stand out. I actually preferred its flavor to that of the polish sausage. The beans on my dog were sweet and a little smokey and complimented very well by the raw onions. The cheese sauce and bacon strip completed this tasty package to knock it out of the park! Overall this was a very positive experience for me. I don't like going out to lunch because I am a little phobic about being back on time. They were way fast and put me at ease for return visits. The dawgs were super tasty and worth every penny. The service was fast and friendly. I'll be back!

A good deal for good food. Plus it's within walking distances of my house if I really get a craving! I felt a little overwhelmed by all the menu options, but I found that a meal deal was the way to go. I ordered a Brooklyn- which is the name of the deal: it comes with a signature dawg, side, and drink for just over $7. My signature dawg was the Yankee Poodle. It was kinda breakfast-y. Bacon, cheese, and a fried egg on top. Then I ordered fries as the side. Top it off with Root Beer and I had an excellent meal. As a whole, it was really greasy and you couldn't eat like that all the time. I can't wait to try it again.

You start out thinking, this is just hot dogs and then you try it. The hot dogs are the best and the different toppings are amazing. It becomes a challenge to find different ways to top a dog. Great sweet potato fries too. Hubby loves the onion straws and the sauce for them is wonderful on EVERYTHING.

  • Victoria H.

Good hot dogs, would only stop here if I was in the neighborhood. My guy, who LOVES spicy foods, peppers, chalula sauce, etc, didn't think the chihuahua dog or the Butkus was spicy enough. The most important note, if you order the onion straws, you only need one per couple. The bag is HUGE!!! I wish they had told us, now we have two half eaten bags of onion straws. Doubtful that will reheat well later.

I work fairly close to this place and have gone here a handful of times, the bacon and peanut butter dog is pretty solid but I'd tell you to skip the Chicago dog. Growing up outside of Chicago, I know that a true Chicago dog comes on a poppy seed bun. The staff didn't.

Okay I wanted to give this place a try. I drive past it all the time. So one Saturday afternoon I decided to stop in with my wife and daughter and her friend. Well the moment we walked in the wife and kids all said that there was this awful smell. It was so bad that they wanted to leave immediately. There were only two other people inside eating. There wasn't even anybody at the front counter. Sorry but the place looked like a mess and we just couldn't get past the smell to order anything.

Was a loyal customer, but they do not have customer service. Was snubbed by the same guy two days in a row, wound up missing lunch both days. Guy was an a$$ preparing food. Looks like they are going backwards with all of the recent negative reviews. Will NEVER go back. Can you give a 0 ?

I was intrigued by the amount of positive reviews and who doesn't love a hot dog so i decided to give it a try. It wasn't overly busy but everything seemed clean enough. The people behind the counter were very pleasant. Noticing that I seemed like a novice they took me through my options and answered all of my questions (I'm a picky eater). I got the Ol' Blue and the Yankee Poodle with fries. Took them back to my hotel and they were delicious. My only "complaint" was that they put too many onion straws on the Ol' Blue but i was able to overcome that :-) Like other posters I would have to say that the hot dogs themselves are good and the toppings just made them better. I'd definitely recommend this place if you are in the area.

We came here one night to use our groupon but then realized that with just two of us there was no way we'd spend the full amount so we just stayed and paid cash. The combo is a pretty good deal with a dog, drink and side for less than $7. I had a sonoran dog which was special for the month of may and it was awesome. The fries we had were a bit soggy but maybe because it was 8:30 on a weeknight? Also the onion strings were too greasy. I will go back because the hot dog was really, really yummy and give the fries another chance. Also, my frontflip gave me a free fried twinkie and they were out so I need to try that!

Great dogs, had ny style and Chicago style. They were both amazing. Frys were great too. Would highly recommended this place!

  • Michael M.

Carrot dog is just weird. My wife is a vegetarian but she won't order that again. I had a Chicago dog but the staff wasn't trained correctly. They didn't know which bun to use. I'll try this place again but on first visit, I'm unimpressed.

Best hotdog off the east coast I've ever had since moving here. The Boxer with bacon and beans is my favorite, the Chicago style is also tight. They also have some exotic ones like a Thai Satay dog with peanut sauce, and a PBJ hotdog which I've never been brave enough to try. If you get a NY style, make sure you tell them to wring the sauerkraut out or you're in for a drippy freakin' mess. They run Groupons often, if they have one running, grab them fast because they sell out all the time. I eat here even without a Groupon, which is high praise for me. I'm a east coast hot dog snob, and these guys have a small piece of my heart. Keep up the great work guys. Clean bathrooms. Clean restaurant. Fast service. Good food. Low prices. What more can you ask for?

    (5)
  • Molly M.

Hot dog tasty, although not fresh (was pulled out of a container of already cooked dawgs). Fries were so soggy and old that they were pretty much not edible. Floor was sticky which made the place feel kind of gross. There's potential, just needs some work. Definitely recommend going during a busy time so you don't get a bunch of food that's been sitting there like we did.

    (2)
  • Brittany B.

I would give them no stars if I could. Nothing about our food was enjoyable. My hot dog seemed like it had been in a hot dog holder all day as it was pretty much inedible because it was hard! The bread was old and crumbly. Not even the fries were good. We will definitely not be returning.

    (1)
  • Jared C.

I have come here several times because we keep getting great deals on Groupon and Living Social. It's a fantastic deal, even at full price. I've never had a better hot dog before. The Buttercup (Chicago-style) is amazing and the Goofy Dawg (peanut butter & bacon) sounded like something I'd hate, but I absolutely loved it. I highly recommend this place. If every hot dog was this good, no one would care how they're made.

  • P M.

I'm usually cautious whenever something is advertised as "New York" style this or that as it is usually not the case. This food experience confirmed that once again. For starters, a New York hot dog experience is simple and inexpensive. Unless things have changed, a beef hot dog from a street vendor w/ mustard and relish runs about $2. It's really that simple and that quick. Add a soda in a can and it's $3. To feed four people at New York Dawg Pound will run you between $30 and $40. That's hard to swallow for hot dogs. Yes, they use Nathan's which is the way to go and it is a larger frank but I almost laughed when I realized they were charging us extra for adding onions! Ultimately, if you're in the mood for Nathan's hot dogs, you're better off getting a few packages from Wal-mart. Will be easier on the wallet.

Found NY Dawg Pound a few months back and I'm mad I just found it. This place is legit if you're a fan of encased meats done right! First off, it's a "locals" type "joint", it's not a fancy place and if you want that for hot dogs...well the two just don't (and shouldn't) go together. I disagree with some of the other reviews that this place is dirty. It's a "joint", it's clean enough but they serve dogs and fried foods so it's not going to be a place you'd eat off the floor (but again, it's not dirty). But get over that if you want awesome dogs served the way they should be served. The owner is always there and he and his staff provide amazing customer service. First thing he asks when you come in is if it's your first time there. If it is, he'll take the time to share some of the favs, find out what you like, match you up perfectly. I'm in CHI and NYC quite a bit for work and I'd stack these guys up against anyone in either city (including Hot Dougs in CHI which is one of my fav places in the world to eat). Now if you're from CHI or NYC you'll prob get bent out of shape at that statement but go try them out for yourself. Menu is awesome, tons of specialty dogs to choose from and you can customize anything you want (big plus). They also figure out what you ordered and usually fit you into some type of combo where your drink or side comes out to be free (a rarity in this day and age); and the prices are VERY fair for how much you get. My favs are the Fritos dog, the Hound Dog, Old Blue and the Butkus (the Cheetos dog rocks as well). Their burger is lights out as well (basically a burger cooked fresh, cut in 1/2 on one of their homemade rolls smothered in cheese). Fries and onion straws are amazing (a type of bbq ranch sauce comes w/ and I almost drank it, it was so good). All in all, stellar customer service, the dogs are unreal, the atmosphere is fun; bring the kids, stop in for lunch, but don't come here on a date expecting to impress or have stainless steel silverware. It's a great little place, kind of tucked away , make the effort to stop by, you'll be glad you did. Reminds me a lot of Hot Doug's in CHI w/o the 45 min wait.

  • Roberto R.

Very good for my first time. They have the best chili cheese fries everything tasted homemade, and it was hot, fresh!

    (5)
  • Kris T.

The only way this place would be better is if they could serve you beer. The staff has a great attitude. They're serious about delivering you the best hot dog in the area. The dogs taste like real meat, and not some by-product that was shaped into a hot dog. The combinations are awesome. I got the chicago style and the dog that had bacon and bleu cheese. They've catered to my company before where I've had the new york style and the chili cheese dog. They're fantastic. Also, great place to take the family; they participate in front flip. You gotta stop by.

  • Nancy B.

I really like it here. The food is exactly what you're anticipating - which is really good but not breathtaking. A previous review was correct... the tables always are a little dingy. But it's well worth the trip, especially for the onion straws.

  • Izabella B.

I would have to say everything taste we'll.. Also though the tables need to be wiped down more because last time I went there was crumbs everywhere.

New York Dawg Pound is a nice addition to the KC restaurant scene - but as another review points out, don't expect this to be a "Blanc for hotdogs". Slightly hidden away on Shawnee Mission Parkway, this place is sort of a dive (the floors are greasy, simple dining room, and fairly simple menu). But if you're looking for an awesome hot dog to remind you of something from Chicago or New York - this is the place for it. Positives: -Great selection of hot dogs with fun names (Yankee Poodle, Boston Terrier, Ol' Blue, etc). -Nothing fancy or super hipster decor inside the restaurant. They let the food do the talking. -Great customer service, everyone was very friendly and helpful. -Affordable and good-sized portions. Negatives: -A little hidden, even though it's right off the street NY Dawg Pound adds a "meat-oriented" restaurant that isn't BBQ-related to KC, and the results are great. This is a type of food that seems to be sorely lacking in the metro. Can't wait to go back and get another Yankee Poodle!

    (4)
  • Michael T.

Had to go with the Yankee Poodle = Bacon Egg n Cheese Dawg! I've tried half the special dogs and the rest are okay, but nothing I would really go back to eat. Definitely the best dogs in KC, though! The specials are okay but a little pricey for a hot dog.

    (4)
  • Sakari C.

I'll start with the positive. The food was good. That's is, no more positive. The guys at the counter were very rude. They did not greet any customers and when they finally had the time they brusquely asked to take orders. And they have a tip jar by the register! Hahaha, you think that behavior gets you tips?! The floor was so sticky you could hear every step. The tables were dirty. Ew, so nasty.

There is nothing more All American or mass appealing than the Hot Dog. Let's just get it out there...I am a wienie fan. You might even say a big wienie fan! With that said, it is important to know, that no matter how many cool names you can come up with, or how fascinating your flavor profiles, your wienie had better taste good! No matter how cute your dogs are...I ain't coming back, unless they titillate my palate. Done! and Done! #1) The very tippy top of the palate titillators is their version of the Chicago Dog, AKA "The Buttercup". Maybe it's not the quintessential traditional Chicago dog, but It's a darn fine representation. They start with an all natural casing Nathan's dog (nice snap), chopped tomatoes instead of wedges is just fine by me. Makes it easier to get a piece of juicy tomato in every bite. Tangy, crisp, dill pickle wedge, onions, relish, yellow mustard, celery salt, and the vinegary, spicy, zip of the Sport peppers! All packed into a soft, steamed, poppy seed bun. It's hard to fault these guys on flavor. If there's one thing these dogs are...it's packed with flavor. #2) The management and staff are friendly, helpful, and they just try soooo hard to please. They will talk you through the menu, and be more than happy to make suggestions. #3) A large variety of interesting dogs to choose from, including the tried and true (plain, corn, etc.) for those in your brood that are less than adventurous in their culinary sampling. Take your own tour of Kansas City hot dogs, and start at New York Dawg Pound. They put the HOT in dog!

If you like hot dogs, this is the place to visit. They have all sorts of toppings, and all of the names are dog themed. They even offer vegetarian hotdogs! And Fried Twinkines. Plus they are super nice

These Hot Dogs are not Life-Altering (you got to go to Chicago for that) but tey are surely hands-down the best dogs in Kansas City. The value for the money is also very good. I had the Shar-pei and one of the NY style dogs. Both were very delicious and tasty. For now, im giving 4 stars till I try their Chicago dog with the nuclear green relish. I may bump it up a notch after.

Sal... Sal is the guy's name with the yellow lenses ... he is one of the owners and seems like he is always there. My current favorite is the Shar-Pei.... it's like a Ginger Terryaki Slaw and it's wonderful! As per my coworker "Spike" has a very HOT sauce. It doesn't say "hot" on the menu, so I just wanted to warn the sensitive. New item! Boston Terrier: Baked beans, nacho cheese, onions and bacon. Yum!

Tried this place after driving by it for work everyday for the last year. Great selection of dogs and toppings for building your own. FRESH JALAPEÑOS! Very few places understand the importance of fresh jalapeños and what they add to the product. Great traditional and bizarre options as well. Fries were seasoned and fantastic also. A man i assume was the owner was extremely friendly and even checked on us to make sure everything was good. Prices are really affordable also. Great combo options and individual dog prices. I will definitely be back.

I don't know why this place has such a high rating. The hot dogs are just ok, but the price you pay for it is not. The buns are always stale, the fries are always soggy. The customer service is a joke. It seems to be a bunch of stoner teens, preoccupied with their own lives. The worst part is how disgusting it is inside the restaurant. The floors are so sticky, I actually came out of my sandal, as it remained stuck to the nasty floor. There are always crumbs on the tables, and around the drink/plastic ware area. I have eaten at this restaurant three times, and that is three times too many. Heed my advice, and don't waste your money here. If you must, bring your Clorox wipes.

These hotdogs are the real deal, ladies and gentlemen. If you want an authentic Chicago Dog, or a delicious home-spun creation, you are in good hands at New York Dawg Pound. I decided to go for the Ol' Blue, on the recommendation from, of all people, the salesman from whom I had just purchased a car. He carried the girth of a fellow who might enjoy a good hot dog, so I was inclined to trust his judgment. I was not disappointed. The Ol' Blue comes with a slathering of sweet, KC style BBQ sauce, a pickle, and a heaping pile of onion straws. If the Z-Man were a hot dog, this is what it would be, and it would be delicious. I also got the Dalmatian, with grilled peppers and onions, chopped jalapenos, and hot mustard. It's a bit like an Italian Hot Beef, but as a hot dog. Pretty darned tasty. The proprietor of the establishment definitely has passion for, and respect of the 'dog, as evidenced both by the food I was served, and by overhearing a spirited discussion with a customer about what constitutes a TRUE Chicago Dog. The atmosphere of the place was already pretty proper for a hot dog joint, but overhearing that conversation sealed the deal. If you're expecting Blanc, but with hot dogs, you're going to be disappointed. It's not a "fancy" place, and to me, that's appealing. It's common knowledge, the best hot dogs are served from carts, at 1am, by people shouting things like, "A wiener for your lady?" I don't want fancy lamp shades, and a four reach-in selection of craft beer. I want no frills, and tasty hot dogs. Don't get me wrong...there certainly are frills to be had at New York Dawg Pound. However, they're solely, and solidly contained within the bun.

Love Ol' Blue when you can get it fresh. I stop here after work and stuff usually has sat around for awhile. They are not always the friendliest folks. They'll have a special, like when they did Groupon, then act like you are robbing them. I never feel comfortable here or I'd stop in more.

I've been here a few times now, and I've been bringin friends in, and really enjoy a great hot dog. Serving Nathan's best all beef hotdogs, how can you go wrong? The topping combinations available range from 'the usual' to 'the extreme'. I've tried 4 different dogs so far, Bulldawg, Ol' Blue, Boxer and the Boston Terrier, and have yet to find one I don't like. The sides I've tried to date are the fries and sweet potato waffle fries which I've stuck with on subsequent visits - delicious! Water is available as are several fountain sodas and bottled beverages as well. Kid combos are reasonably priced and ample proportions. A few times, I have been approached by staff to inquire if the food was satisfactory and if I needed anything further. I love that person touch which is rare. I found them through Groupon and will be a continued returning customer. Helpfun hint: you'll probably pass it up the first time you try to get there. They need a better visual. Upside, once you find it, you won't have trouble finding it again because you will be back.

GREAT dogs, great guys working there. Wasn't a fan of the Asian slaw (too bland?) but loved the (gulp) super fattening and delicious onion straws. I'll be back.

This is a total dive place, but was so stoked to find a place in the area with creative and scrumptious hot dogs! My first visit was last night, whilst trying to find a place to grab a quick meal before a showing at the theatre. Stumbled upon NY Dawg Pound. They had some pretty crazy options, one of which involving peanut butter, but decided to go with the Yankee Poodle (bacon, nacho cheese, fried eggs) and was not disappointed! They use Nathan's hotdogs and I've heard from my boyfriend (an ex-meat-counter worker) that those are the best 'dogs around. Getting our tray, it all looked overwhelming, but I was able to tackle it pretty well---and not as messy as you would imagine, either. The nacho cheese kind of turned into this rubbery/solidified consistency that wasn't so appetizing, but randomly held the hotdog together quite well. My only tiffs were that I wish the customer service were a lot better. The man who helped us out didn't go over the menu or give us the options of getting a brat, etc., and as a first-timer, you'd think they would be a bit more friendly. We ordered a side of fries and it was barely enough for one person (it was maybe half a handful in a paper bag). Otherwise, it was a pretty decent experience. The weather was glorious and we enjoyed our dogs in their outdoor seating. Ah, to watch the Shawnee Mission traffic while enjoying a good 'dawg. Kenny got the BBQ hotdog and another one (the names escape me) but it had this amazing spicy ketchup/red sauce concoction. I would definitely recommend this to any adventurous eaters out there who don't mind a sticky floor and getting a little messy.

Always delicious and prepared right in front of you! We make trips from the northland just to enjoy a different dog every time. They have some hot dogs with toppings that don't seem like they should be as delicious as they are! :-)

I found out today one of my favorite things is a fried egg on a Nathan's. Who knew? Egg + Bacon + Cheese + Dawg = Yankee Poodle The name made me snort laugh. I had to get it. We'll be back. The friendly owner came by to see what we thought after our first bite and all we could do was make gargly noises. They also deliver within a 6 mile radius, and I just wonder if there is a minimum purchase for that service...and what time do you close...?

Great food at a great price. Picked the Brooklyn Combo, one of five offered. Got my pick of a dawg went with Bull Dawg with chili, cheese, and onions, a side and drink for under $7. Chose Asia Slaw as a side and serving size was nearly a pint. Dawg made a firm feel with nice snap of the skin and tremendous flavor. Just the right mix stacked on top. Everything was fresh and large portion. Slaw had great depth of flavor and crisp. Slight critique is dawg are packed and the bun can loose integrity and get soggy if you wait too long to dive in. Tried my wife's brat. It had deep flavors and nice fat balance. Onion straws were generously portioned, fresh fried and had nice sauce on the side. Manager came out to check on us, staff explained it all and we'll be back. Was missing Haute Dawg in NoVA but NYDP is our new go to place.

I have been in to this location a few times now and I have to say I am a big fan of what they are doing here. The hot dogs are all 100% beef dogs and have a great flavor to them. The value here is very good, $6.50 for a combo of a specialty dog, chips, and a drink. Trust me 1 dog is all you need, they are loaded with condiments. The dining area is a little run down but then again you aren't going to eat here for the atmosphere. When this place is busy the dining room can get a little trashed but never to the point where it is out of hand. The staff is very courteous and always ask you if you enjoyed everything, you can tell they want to make sure the customer is always happy. Highly recommended.

This is the way a hot dog should be......made with Nathan's, lots of toppings to choose from and crazy yummy! The dogs all have cutesy name such as Bulldawg, Chihuahua and Hound Dog. I had the Spike Dawg which is topped with kraut, saucy onions and mustard on your choice of a plain bun or poppy seed. I opted for the poppy seed. It was delightfully messy and tasty. I ended up using a knife and fork to finish. A huge plus they have Zapp's potato chips! The prices are very reasonable. They have plenty of combo options too. I can't wait to go back to try their Chicago style or Buttercup as it's called.

The dogs are very good, however it would be nice if your shoes didn't stick to the nasty floor! Please mop once in a blue moon! I don't think I've been there once with a clean floor. And cook your fries longer. They're often very soggy.

So happy to have a hot dog place nearby in a mostly hot-dog-less town. While I despise ordering anything that has the word "yankee" in it, because it reminds of invading scum, I should say that the "Yankee Poodle" is damned delicious. Bacon, egg, and cheese on a Nathan's hot dog (those are the type of wieners they use) with an egg bread bun. I also got the Chicago style, as is always my custom when going to a new hot dog place. Both went down great with a bottle of Grape Boylan's.

I had been waiting for the perfect moment to try New York Dog Pound, and decided that before the Chief's game today would be a great opportunity. Upon entering, we were boisterously greeted by the owner (and former New Yorker) and asked if we were "first timers". He explained the menu and the combo meals. I was happy to see that they used Nathan's hot dogs, cause, well, they are my favorite. Alright, so they have about 15 different combinations of "dawgs" but you can also create your own. I had the "bulldawg" (chili, cheese, mustard, onions) with kraut. The "dawg" was served on a poppy seed bun. They have several sides to choose from, I saw the onion straws and they looked great, and the owner actually offered us a sample of the sweet potato waffle fries. They were crisp and both sweet and savory, I would definitely make my dawg a combo next time so that I could have an entire order. I was having a sweet craving so I grabbed a little cookie treat from the counter. It was homemade, and definitely hit the spot! I think my tab was about 5 dollars with tax. I will be back. Yay Dawg Pound. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Got the Bronx combo with two specialty dogs, side and drink. Figured it would be a bit much food but this place is a little out of the way so who knows when I'd be back. Was charged an extra dollar for the sweet potato waffle fries. Didn't see where it said some sides cost extra. The combo just said side. Niether hot dog impressed. The dogs themselves seemed like they'd been cooked a long time ago and had just been sitting there. They seemed a bit on the sloppy side. The chicago style dog I had at the state fair 2 weeks back was put together better. The fries were ok... All in all I won't be back unless someone pulls my arm.

I kept hearing 98.9 the Rock talk about this place and I work around the corner so decided to try it. I thought the hot dog was really good but their guacamole needed some help. I know guacamole is made fresh daily so might of had it on an "off" day. The fries are really good and thought the topping selection is good. I think since its new they will add different choices for toppings later but for now I will go back. My dad had a chili dog and he didnt like the chili or the bun but he's old and smokes so his taste buds are not as good as they used to be....haha. I stood in line for 1 1/2 hours in LA at Pinks Hot Dog stand in LA and although it was well worth the wait I thought NYDP had a better tasting hot dog. Pinks toppings are amazing but its been around since the beginning of time. Everyone needs to support NYDP to keep it around!!!!

Had a Living Social deal, so stopped in to try NYDP. Ordered the Dalmatian, buttercup, goofy and ol blue. And sweet potato waffle fries. The fries tasted like they had been there for hours, definitely not fresh. the hot dogs themselves didn't taste fresh either, they looked like shriveled up ET fingers. Maybe we just came at the wrong time of day...then said our living social had already been redeemed, but still honored it. customer service was wonderful, he explained the menu and was nice and oh so helpful, but the food was inedible and my remaining "dawgs" left on my punchcard will not be used.... Toby, my 6 month old puppy, did have the Goofy dawg- hot dog, peanut butter and bacon-he loved it!!

OMG the best dogs! The French fries are great-no ketchup required. Had the Lab-bacon on a Nathan's frank. Yum. Bulldawg-a chili dog was amazing as well. Didn't get a chance to try the deserts but I'll be back. Don't forget to try the onion strings as well. Only thing missing is an ice cold COKE!

This is absolutely my favorite place to get a dog, sausage, or polish. I just figured out today that u can even get a burger! There is no place like this in KC unless you go to Westport and hit the 3am food truck frenzy. Even then , I prefer the dawg pound over the great food trucks in westport.

I have been here before I got a groupon but dang I loved getting that. We have been able to try several different things. Most of their staff is super friendly. We had one guy who wasnt (More later). This place is kind of a hole in the wall on Shawnee Mission parkway near QT and Shawnee Mission Kia. The first time we came here a tall gentlemen went over the menu with us and boy they have a lot of ways to get your dog. Normally the service is great. The last time we had a shorter guy who didn't even ask what kind of dog or sausage we wanted for the kind of 'dogs' we ordered, just threw hot dogs on the buns To start with they have Italian Sausage and Hot Dogs (Nathan's Dogs!!), Brats and Polish Sausage (Those 2 are $1 more). They have poppy seed (For a great Chicago Dog) and regular buns if you don't like the poppy seed buns. So you got your dog with choice of bun and sausage now you can get a side. They have good fries, great sweet potato fries and tasty onion straws. Grab ya a beverage and you have a full meal. There is a combo price you can get if you are getting all 3. This place is a must try. Inexpensive and solid.

Super divey atmosphere, big ass Johnny Dare mural on the wall, well deserved pitch awards listed, got the yankee poodle (bacon, egg, cheese), same as what the girl got, looked incredible... tasted better. The best thing was that the dog (dawg?) was so overstuffed that I could barely fit it in my mouth. The girl couldn't, got to watch her with a knife and fork try to attack her monstrosity. They don't skimp on toppings or flavor, this place is the real deal. Make sure when you go here with someone else, to get some sort of side - they have a combo deal for $9.50 for 2 dogs, a small side, and a drink. Total if memory serves was $13, and we were both super full. This is the closest I've gotten to places in NYC/Syracuse, the fact that we have something like this in Kansas City is to be celebrated. Another champion venture to a new establishment. I'm sure I'll be back here a lot.

I love this place. The most creative and best hot dogs in the Kansas City area. About 12 different hot dogs that are completely outside the box. The Goofy Dog is my favorite: peanut butter, bacon and hot dog. Anything from Chicago style, chili cheese, Asian, BBQ, etc. The sweet potato waffle fries are an absolutely extra treat! If you're in Kansas City you MUST stop by for lunch!

Absolutely what you hope for in a hot dog stand to take the kids to on a weekend. They were made to order and depending on what you order, it can really be sloppy. My Italian Sausage with a lot of stuff (I don't even remember all of it) was falling of the bun because it was so full. Good quality products used as well, Nathan's Dogs and Scimeca's sausage. No, it's not a fancy evening out with the wife but, it is a GREAT afternoon with the kids.

So the other day (yesterday - I am trying to get my reviews done in a more timely manner), I was wandering down Shawnee Mission Parkway with a gnawing in my belly (ok it was lunch time and I needed something quick and delicious) and what do my eyes behold but...New York Dawg Pound (ok so I knew it was there and wanted to try it). I pulled into the lot and this is what I found. Delicious weiners. I love me some weiners - be them weiner dogs, weiners in a bun, weiners....well you get the point. Anyway, I am a fan of the hot dog. My friend Beth and I had never been here but I had heard good things so in we went. No line but lots of filled tables. We read over the board and made our selections - Beth went with the Buttercup - that's their Chicago dog for you newbies - and I went with the doberman. Mine was delicious - good spicy mustard, delicious bun and dog and the sauerkraut...oh don't get me started. Beth's dog had bright green relish, peppers, pickle, and all sorts of other bits. Looked good - she dug it. We also tried the onion straws and the waffle cut sweet potato fries. Both were delicious though the straws were a big messy and hard to get in my mouth - but I managed. Overall I enjoyed it. It's near my office so I will be back. A manager or one of the owners stopped by all the tables to make sure we were happy with everything - we were. Yay weiners! okaybye.

Nathan's famous are the dogs you will find on the menu here. Nathan's are not my favorite but hubby likes them. They have so many different ways to eat a hot dog here. They have your standard Chili Cheese and Chicago dogs. Then they have a peanut butter hot dog. Since I don't really like Nathan's but I will take a bite or two they are good and steamed to perfection. I usually get the Vegan Burger. Yes I said Vegan Burger and it is really good. You can top it with anything you desire. I had salsa and avacado on mine. It was heavenly. They also have baked potatoes that are marvelous. They are baked to perfection and not a bit dry. Tons of toppings to go with this little potato gem. The service is fast and friendly. The two owners are always there and make sure you are happy. One runs the register and the other runs the kitchen. I would recommend this place if you like Nathan's or just want a nice baked tater.

I finally had the opportunity to check this place out! After being bored with the options around my office, I decided to venture out and check out the NYDP, yeah, acronyms baby! There are several options for the dogs, whether you like Chicago style to plain and simple, NYDP has you covered. I took the advice of my fellow Yelper Marie D. and tried the sweet potato waffle fries and true to her word, they were super good! The owner rang me up and was sincerely genuine when he thanked me for coming in. I took a few menus and distributed them in my office just because he was so personable. Definitely a fan, I'll be back!

The hot dogs here are pretty good. Unfortunately I'm kind of (extremely) picky when it comes to Chicago dogs, so of course I had to get one here so I could whine about it not being authentic. I mean, they're using skinless franks fercryinoutloud! They also top it with diced tomato instead of a wedge, but at risk of forfeiting my Chicago dog cred, I kind of prefer dices. Why? I don't know. Stop asking questions. Look, a pickle wedge! If you're not expecting a real Chicago dog (and given the fact that the place is called New York Dawg Pound and features signs advertising Nathan's Famous, I wasn't) it's actually a pretty decent dog. The Spike is similarly tasty. Haven't yet tried their chili, so can't comment on it, but I look forward to going back. Best part as far as food goes? OMG ONION STRAWS! Seriously. Man those are good, and made fresh to order. Better than onion rings. The "straw sauce" is kind of a weird deal, I think it's KC Masterpiece or some other sweet BBQ sauce mixed with a creamy dressing, maybe mayo or ranch. Tastes pretty good though. Service is always 100%. The main guy, who I assume is the owner, is just a super crazy nice guy who will make you feel welcome even if you stop in at like 10:55pm and the place is empty, which I did.

I have given this place two tries now and been disappointed both times. The hot dogs seem like they were cooked a day or two ago and the buns were getting stale. This place has a great idea but maybe if they cooked the hot dog when you ordered it (really how long could it take) things would be better.

I am a junk food junkie as my hips and thighs will tell on me. I also love hot dogs. Yes I know how they are made and when I buy them in the grocery store, I usually buy Hebrew National, so the quality that I measure a hot dog by is pretty high. A friend of mine recommended the Dawg Pound to me and I was in the area on Friday, so stopped by for lunch. I ordered the BLT Dog. I enjoyed it very much. The hot dog bun was large egg bun. The hot dog itself was not one of those puny dogs you can get at the gas station or even the ball park. It was a big dog, a good inch in diameter, and it was hot and juicy. A plain old dog would have been yummy. The toppings were FRESH. The diced tomatoes and the lettuce were perfect and the bacon crisp. I topped my dog with mustard and mayo. What I like is that ketchup is not really an option, oh it's available, but not on the topping bar by the guys behind the counter making your dawg. I completed my meal with YUMMY waffle cut sweet potato fries. Those in themselves would be worth going back to pound to get. I will be back for more dawgs...they had some interesting combos on the menu...yes you can get your plain old dawg, or one PB&J...so for the adventuresome eater and the more reserved eater, this would be a great place to eat.

With its stark white decor, cafeteria style ordering and location in an easily overlooked strip mall on Shawnee Mission Parkway in OP, there's nothing stylish, trendy or hip about New York Dawg Pound ... so they'd better make one mean hot dog. Many "kiddie menus" would lead you to believe that hot dogs are dining fare for the 12 and under crowd. But any dog lover will tell you, when done right, they are not. At NYDP, they use Nathan's ... enough said. Then they put that high quality all beef dog on your choice of bun, pile it with a large variety of toppings (if you're into that kind of thing), and serve that sucker up either alone or with your choice of sides. All this for a very reasonable price. On my visit I had the Buttercup (aka the Chicago dog), a deliciously messy ode to the style of dog that I have always held in the highest of places. Everything about my dog was right, from the neon green relish to the spicy bite of the sport peppers. I was in hot dog heaven with each bite. By the time I left NYDP I was stuffed ... but I was still thinking about my next visit. That, my friends, is the sign of a good dog.

I was really excited to see a hot dog place in the area with Nathan's dogs. I am a vegetarian but a handful of times a year I crave a hot dog. Vienna Beef is ideal, but Nathan's is next best. They are from all beef sirloin. Really the only way to eat a hot dog. There are vegetarian options though! You can get a carrot dog in any of the options just like the meat. They also have black bean veggie burgers! My favorite style is Chicago, no relish. Mmmm, I just love those flavors! :-) The sides are fantastic! Super greasy and unhealthy but sooooo tasty. I have only tried the sweet potato fries and the onion straws. So, why only 4 stars? The buns. They should be STEAMED and rarely are. I have been here 3 times and only once were the buns soft, and that was during the lunch hour. The two times I came in the evening they were hard...almost as though they'd been toasted or something...but were super dry. Bleh. It was awful and totally ruined my meal. Also, they should really fix how oily their fries and straws are...I mean they are saturated with oil. I would eat there a lot more often if I thought there was a way I could do so without giving myself a heart attack at 28. If they can fix the stale buns and the fries and straws from dripping with oil, then I will give 5 stars. Now that we are done with the food...the place is hard to see from the street so you really need to be looking for it, signage is only on one side really, so it is likely you will miss it your first time going there. The inside is nothing special, really, just what a typical fast food place might look like, although there is an arcade area in the back. The owner also works the register and is friendly. Enjoy.

Since discovering the New York Dawg Pound, it has been on my "to visit" list. A cloudy Sunday lunchtime was the perfect time to go. Sign says they open at 11 on Sunday, and we were there about 1125. Not being familiar with their ordering process didn't seem to irritate the help like it does in some other establishments. In fact there was several other people getting the coaching encouragement of what I took to be the owner. We selected the Brooklyn combo that comes with one dog, one side and one drink. You may think you are super hungry when you arrive and may consider the Bronx combo with two signature dogs, unless you are a very ravenous eater, I would advise against it. You will get plenty with just the one. On our order today was the "doberman" with kraut and spicy mustard. The mustard was just right, a little bit of kick and tang without setting you on fire. The dawg was wonderful! Juicy and tasty, definitely not your run of the mill dog. The Kraut was very good quality, crisp and flavorful. The other combo was a "Yankee Poodle" which has bacon (yes Marie it has a strip of bacon on it), fried egg and cheese sauce. The fries were hot and very good, mildly seasoned. Could have used a few morefries in the order, but that was irrelevant. I saw the server weighing the bags of fries before presentation. I have never been to New York, or even really know what a New York dog should taste like, but I was intrigued with the setup and the menu. So if this is New York, I will order one when I ever get there. Top Notch! Everything we had was worth recommending. The place is very void of decoration or frill. concrete floors, self serv drinks, a pretty no-nonsense operation. I was amazed at the variety of the clientele that visited while we were there. It ran from the mini van full of kids with the soccer mom, college "dudes" that looked like they were still working on Saturday night, to a stiff-nosed, smartly dressed older couple that got out of a Lexus. So this tells me that it appeals to a wide variety of folks. My only knock on the place is its location, kind of all by itself..so you have to make the effort to journey here, but in hindsite that would be worth a return. The visit to the cash register is not for the faint at heart. I can hear some of my circle saying, $7 for a hot dog!!?? Well yes, but after sampling what they had to offer, I'm going to think of it as $7 for a trip to New York...that is a bargain in anyones book.

The staff is so friendly and accommodating that I want to give this place five stars based on that alone. I find that customer service is a dying art, yet the staff at this little hog dog place has keeping happy customers down to a science. I do wish they had a veggie dog on the menu, they do have a boiled carrot (they were out when I went) that they dress as a hot dog. They have a veggie burger that they put in a hot dog bun which is a great concept but doesn't really work. I wish they would put it on a hamburger bun. It was very good just close to impossible to eat. We also ordered the fried Twinkies which of course is as good as it sounds.

Delicious food, but the cleanliness of the establishment left something to be desired. I will probably give it another go, because the variety of hotdogs is amazing!

This place is totally awesome. If you are looking for a Hot Dog this is the place to come. I like the KC Blue with onion straws and BBQ sauce. The price is fair and would recommend it highly.

Before coming here for lunch, I visited the website and found out that there's an arcade inside. I could only think of one other restaurant with an arcade... CiCi's Pizza. Gross. But! I was pleasantly surprised. I had the Bronx combo with a Doberman (sauerkraut and mustard) and Shar-Pei (teriyaki, pineapple, "asian slaw") and a side of sweet potato fries. One bite into the Doberman and it was obvious that the star of the show was the hot dog itself. I'm still not sure what's in hot dog meat, but this stuff was good- juicy and full of flavor. The NYDP site says they use Nathan's but this hot dog was much more substantial than a Nathan's. The asian slaw on the Shar-pei tried to steal the show but I would not be fooled. It's all about the hot dog here (unlike Dog Nuvo, which is also a great hot dog place). All the fancy stuff that comes with on the dog is just a bonus.

As good as it gets for a hot dog joint! We were a bit hesitant when we saw the outside of the building, but don't let the initial appearance scare you away. Thanks to Yelp, we verified the ratings/reviews and ventured inside. The minute we walked in, we were greeted by who I believe to be the owner Sal with his awesome NY accent...love it. He was extremely helpful to explain and suggest different menu items, although I ended up going with the Bulldawg with a side of sweet potato waffle fries, which were both extremely tasty. I definitely look forward to trying some of the other menu items!

I decided to go to the New York Dawg Pound to see what all the fuss was about. I got the Brooklyn combo (signature dawg, side, drink). I chose the Bulldawg (chili, cheese, mustard, onions) and liked it quite a bit. The hotdog was tasty and the fries were pretty damn good. The only complaint I had was that the bun was so damn dry. I'm not sure if they were so busy that they couldn't keep the bags closed or what. All I know is that the bun was far too dry which is why I gave it the 3 stars instead of four. I'm no kind of regular, and this is only based on one visit...I know, I know...so, I may need to update this if and when I make it back in.

Got the Bronx combo with two specialty dogs. One was the Goofy Dog. Peanut Butter and Bacon sounds like a good combination, but I think it needs jelly. The other was the Buttercup. Typical Chicago like dog. Flavorful and I like that spicy pepper. Would have preferred the bun toasted though. Sweet Potato fries were good, not too greasy, but slightly overdone. Friendly staff, quick service. It was busy a time, but it seemed that everything was rolling good. PS They were open to my suggestions.

Been driving by this hot dog joint on Shawnee Mission Parkway lately so I decided to give it a try yesterday. Their menu is posted right above the walk-up order counter. I might warn that their ordering system can be somewhat confusing, especially to first timers. I strongly recommend checking out the menu on their webiste so you have an idea what to expect. They list all of their specialty "dawgs" along with a description of the toppings which is very helpful. They have quite a few combinations, including some which you would never think of trying, like a hog dog with peanut butter and bacon. They also have a build-a-dog section on the menu where you can choose from a dog, brat, Italian sausage, etc, and then choose which toppings you want. I decided to try their "bulldawg" which is a NY-style dog topped with cheese, chili, mustard, and onions. The quality of the dogs is pretty high. They're bigger than a standard hot dog and have a nice snap when bitten into. They're not shy with the toppings either. The chili and cheese were smothered on and were complimented by a perfect squeeze of mustard. I don't normally like chili dogs but this was one of the best hot dogs I have ever eaten. I would also recommend trying the sweet potato waffle fries with your dawg. Prices were pretty reasonable too. For $6.50 you can get a specialty dawg, a side of sweet potato fries, and a drink. I'm definitely going to try this place again to sample some of the other dawgs. Service was fast and one of the employees (manager, owner maybe) actually stopped by the table to see how our meal was going. By the time we left, there was a line all the way to the back door so go early! It looks like they deliver as well if you live close enough. Give this place a try.

Hands down, this was probably the best hot dog I've ever eaten... and trust me, I love hot dogs. I was looking for a place to eat close to my apartment and found New York Dawg Pound out of the blue. There are lots of options on the menu, I ended up getting the "Yankee Poodle" which features Bacon, a fried egg and Cheese on a hot dog in a good size bun. I also added onions. There are lots of topping options. They have some great side choices, including fries, slaw, bake beans, sweet potato waffle fries, etc. I went for the onion straws. They were HEAVEN. They cooked the up right in front of me and put them in a paper sack. For only $2 I got a huge sized serving. For you non-meat eaters, they also have some good salad options or a baked potato or a veggie burger. All together I spent about $7 for the hot dog and the onion straws and a drink. The owners are super friendly and even walked around to see how I liked my food. I felt like that was a nice touch. I know i'll definitely be coming back. It's awesome to see a local business that is creative AND quite tasty. You are missing out if you don't give them a try.

I consider myself a foodie but when it comes to dogs I'm probably more of a gourmand so naturally I decided to stuff myself with the Bronx combo; 2 hot dawgs and a bag of chips. I choose the Bulldawg and the Dalmatian. The Bulldawg is standard New York fare with chili, mustard and onions. A pretty decent street cart style dog it would be much improved by larger bits of onion and the mustard should be English not American yellow. As is, the flavors blur and the Nathan's Famous gets overshadowed by mostly average toppings. The Dalmatian is a twist on the classic Italian sausage and peppers combination however it suffers from the fear of seasoning plaguing kitchens across the nation. Seriously, salt is a good thing guys! Everything on this dawg was well cooked and portioned but peppers need salt to come to life (or at least a little fennel seed). All told, I'd really like to see this place improve and survive. Perfect service, great family atmosphere and a potential KC gem. I'll be back next month to check in again.

I was more than hesitant to try NYDP mostly because of the outside of the decrepit building on Shawnee Mission Parkway. If you are driving by it, you may possibly mistake it for a Laundromat? I did. Do not let this deter you from trying this most magnificent place. We were greeted affectionately and asked if we had ever been in. As this was our first time, we asked what they would recommend for some Midwest kids with no hot dog palate except for the standard nasty Ballpark's-They-Plump-When-You-Cook-Em. The owner suggested the bulldawg (Nathan's dog, chili, cheese, mustard, and onions). We both tried and promptly fell in dawg love forever. We also ordered a side of sweet potato waffle fries, one fountain drink, and a water. It came to around $12. The combo we got was a little confusing though. The Bronx combo comes with two dawgs of your choice, one side item, and a drink for $9. So I guess there are some people who would actually be able to eat two of these things in one sitting?! That's all I can think of. But, the one order of sweet potato fries was enough for two. Also, as from previous reviews, they have quite a few other selections that boast the *Chicago style and the *New York style. The owner and all the staff were enjoyable and down to earth. I can still smell the onions and the scent of mustard in the air. Heaven. I'll be back NYDP.

Great hot dogs! Perhaps a little overpriced. Hot dog, fries, and soda will run you close to $10. However, the hotdogs are worth it

What could be more fun than a restaurant dedicated to glorified hot dogs?! I try to keep my meat consumption to a minimum, but I quite enjoy all the other parts of a hot dog, so imagine my delight when I saw the carrot dawg. It is exactly as it sounds (a roasted carrot in a bun), and it is FABULOUS! I had mine as a Buttercup (Chicago style)...I am in love.

Their hot dogs are out of this world. They always have a groupon available for 50% off 10 dogs. My wife and I are huge fans of the Yankee Poodle. It has fried egg, bacon and nacho cheese.

Another venture into this place only to find one occupied table and the rest were not wiped to even resemble being clean. The bathroom wasn't all that tidy either. The floor was literally sticky all around the place. Time for a good cleaning folks. Customers know they are at a dog joint but they don't like eating on dirty tables and having their feet stick with every step! Now the food. Stale buns that crumble when you bit into them are not my favorite. Neither are baked beans that taste like they have been cooked with peppered beef jerky in a bucket full of molasses. I was even charged extra for these but I saw nothing on the menu that stated that. I must have missed it, or is it posted??? Bottom line, the food is too expensive for what it is. Next time I pass by I'll just wave and find some place else to eat.

Been here multiple times to try out the various dogs and haven't been disappointed yet. Even the goofy dawg - peanut butter and bacon - was really good. The service has always been pretty good too. I do highly recommend giving this place a go. Couple quick nit-picky things though. 1. There's a grill guy that typically works there that can't ever remember to ask you if it's "for here" or "to go." It's only annoying because once you tell him it's to go he acts extremely put upon to get the little to go box. 2. It is a lot better to go when they're busy. Otherwise you will get what some other reviewers have mentioned - stale buns and overcooked hot dogs. Just use this information to arm yourself so you can go and have a good experience. Some places just have faults and circumnavigating them doesn't take much effort if you're aware. Also, love the sweet potato waffle fries. They're seasoned with garlic salt and just great.

While I overall liked the dogs, I just can't get over how the dirty restaurant is. Please clean that sticky floor near the soda fountain. Even visiting early in the day, you stick to the floor....gross.

I was kind of blinded by the list of toppings as well as the different combination of toppings on the gourmet dogs. I think I could try a new dog everyday for a year without repeating. But a girl cannot live by hot dogs alone (and still be bathing suit ready) so in daily dogs I will not partake. The sweet potato waffle fries are super good! Seasoned with a more savory blend of spices and it works! The owner? manager? came over and talked with us for a while exhibiting some sort of strange behavior of genuinely conversing with us and actively seeking our honest feedback. Now I've gotten the casual pass-by of a shift manager at restaurants with the obligatory and extremely rhetorical, "is everything okay?" Bu this was something new. Something so new, maybe it was old...old-fashioned pride of ownership and willingness to put out a stellar product? And then opening the door to accountability of that product? After my shock wore off, I was impressed. He mentioned that they had done some promotions with mini-dogs previously and he was thinking of adding them to the menu full-time. So Mr. Old Fashioned, if you're reading this, a mini-dog on the menu would definitely make me a more frequent customer:)

You walk in the door to bare white walls with badly framed posters of New York and hand painted lettering for the bathroom sign and others, in an attempt at graffiti style, I think. So, the decorator should probably stick to their day job, but, who cares really. Step up to the counter, and the people behind the cafeteria style counter kindly guide you through the menu if it's your first visit. I ordered the Bronx deal, for $9.50 it comes with 2 of their Signature "Dawgs" (they have several to choose from), a side order (again, several to choose from) and a fountain drink. They also offer Bratwurst or Scimeca's Italian Sausage in place of a hot dog, I believe for a dollar more to sub in a Bratwurst for any of their hot dog specialties. I played it safe, since you could potentially go horribly wrong with an incorrect choice. This was my first visit after all. I got The Bulldawg, a chili cheese dog, and The Buttercup, a Chicago style hot dog. I got Zapps Chips (playing it a little on the safe side), and of course the soft drink (dixie cup style). I did try the Sweet Potato fries, they were delicious and savory, just like one of the the previous reviewers stated. When you get the food, your first thought is, wow, that's a HUGE hot dog. And by huge, I mean, you really have to consider how you're going to eat it. Stick with the fork, due to it's shear size, or go the hand to mouth route? I attempted the eating with hands feat...a mistake! Chili on face, spilled everywhere, etc....word of advice gentlemen, don't try to be too macho, stick with the fork. The Chicago dog is exactly what you've been craving if you haven't had one in a very long time, right down to the neon green relish. The Chili dog was perfect, onions, chili, cheese, little bit of mustard. They use Nathans hot dogs, PERFECT. A little firmer than your average hot dog, with some nice bite to it. I didn't much care for the Zapps Chips, but I don't like thick sliced chips. Might be your thing, but not mine. Then you get to the end, you know the Cheese paper, on a burger? Well, you end up with chili, onions, some of the neon green relish mixed in there. So you think, do I really need that last little bit? Yes, yes you do. In short, in case you skipped to the end...delicious! This place will definitely be added to my list of favorites. Moved into the rotation of favorite comfort food restaurants. Not a place to eat every day, simply due to it just can't be all that healthy for you. FYI, the counter says they deliver, but I didn't ask.

Why does every Yelp page have to have someone from New York or L.A. who must smugly inform the world that they are from New York or L.A. (as if that makes their palates more refined or their opinions more reputable) and name-drop a restaurant and draw unnecessary comparisons for no reason? Well, I'm not from New York (or L.A.), but I think that a group of New York transplants opening a place serving creative hot dogs and sides - in a city lacking in decent hot dog restaurants - is a great idea. Anyone who has eaten Nathan's hot dogs can tell that these are Nathan's dogs (well, almost everyone, I guess). I was actually a little disappointed by this. I can have a Nathan's dog at home. I'd rather have something I can't buy at Hy-Vee, but that's a minor complaint. Good is good. And the Nathan's dogs they served here were transformed by the delicious toppings and buns. I found the prices to be very reasonable, with combos including a drink and choice of a good variety of generously-portioned "small" sides. I tried the Yankee Poodle (bacon, egg, and cheese dog - SO good!), with a side of onion straws (also very good), and a refillable soda - all for $6.50. It was definitely well worth the cost. The employees were also extremely helpful and friendly. Great service! There are many other things I'm looking forward to trying!* *Although, if I had eaten at Shake Shack, I'm sure my perception of good food would be completely altered, and I'd probably think this was garbage, right?

This is a fabulous place to eat! Easy, cheap, and GOOD! I love a good hot dog so when I found this place with a friend of mine I was in love. All of their dogs are good and their onion strings are delicious. I'm not a fan of sweet potato fries, but I hear they have amazing ones. I would definitely recommend going here for a delicious hot dog!!

Every once in awhile, I crave hot dogs. My husband is a fan of a real "Chicago" dog. So, we tried New York Dawg Pound. It was so good. Everybody knows it is not an official Chicago dog unless it is a Nathan's Hot Dog on a poppy seed bun. He really enjoyed it. I just wish it was a little closer to Westport.

I wanted to like this place but it's just so-so. They got my order wrong so things got off to a bad start. I asked for a Bulldog hot dog and got a Bulldog brat. The chili on the brat was very good and the roll it came on was very good too. I think you can get a better brat from Johnsonville though. The fries were just average. The spicy Asian slaw was good but not special. It was very crowded at 11:30AM and it must be popular. I doubt we'll come back.

I am upset because I am a Nathan's aficionado and this place claims to have Nathan's hot dogs when they have long thick hot dogs. I have never seen these served in Coney Island but it could be possible that the owners of New York Dawg Pound contracted Nathan's to make a special jumbo long hot dog for Kansas consumption. The owner may be a "former New Yorker" but I'm thinking he has not eaten at Shake Shack, Grey's, Crif Dogs, but may possibly have eaten from the hot dog cart on the SE corner of 8th & Broadway that serves hot pink cooked onions. These hot dogs are sloppy and cost $5 each. Maybe if they upped the decor from letting their 5 year old stencil ABCs on the wall I might consider paying $2 but that would be then and only then. For now, I will stay away. I will say that the potato buns are definitely a step in the right direction but this place reminds me too much of a cafeteria with buckets of slop. Update: Some people are confused by my review and have tried to point out that they sell jumbo Nathan's hot dogs at Sam's Club. Well, they don't sell them at Nathan's, located in Coney Island, New York. So logically it would follow that it is impossible for any jumbo hot dog to be a Coney Island hot dog. Facts are facts.

Sometimes you just get a craving for a good hot dog, and New York Dawg Pound is the place to get them. I decided to have the Dalmatian, and ordered the sweet potato fries - Nom, Nom, Nom! It hit the spot and filled my tummy. I will definitely be back!

On a business trip to the area, thought this sounded like a great place to have a dawg. The group was not disappointed!! The dog, the bun, and the service was excellent. I am not sure how a NYer ends up in Kansas, but he has created a hot dog haven. GREAT JOB!!!

I'm a HUGE fan of the New York Dawg pound. The dogs are awesome and the topping selection is quite extensive. I like how I can build my own dog or pick one of the many delicious specialty dogs. You get your food quickly and the always friendly service staff is top notch. Another thing I adore about this place is that...It is a MESS. There are crumbs on the floor and on some of the tables. The onion straws are so greasy, you can barely hold the white paper sack without it slipping out of your hands. All the dogs are piled so high with scrumptious toppings that it is nearly impossible to leave the New York Dawg Pound without a new stain on the front of your shorts. Children are running around with mustard and chili all over their hands and you are nearly guaranteed to hear at least one old man pass gas before your meal comes to an end. It is such a fun time! This is a messy, happy, tasty place to eat and definitely not for snobbish adults! Don't hope for a romantic date or peace and quiet because you won't find it. Long live the New York Dawg Pound! Woof! Woof!

Had lunch there today and loved it! I got the chihuahua dawg and was full off that one. While I was there, I saw one of the workers walk a man with a little child's food to the table, get a high chair, then help seat the little girl in it. I've never seen customer service like that anywhere! I will definitely be going back.

These all-beef dawgs (and brats, too) are very yummy! I had the Doberman and it was what I expected. My husband like the Chicago-style Buttercup and then went back the next day with a buddy and ordered the Ol' Blue, which he says is delicious. The people are friendly and the food comes out fast. It's not a fancy place, but hopefully you don't expect that out of your hot dog joint. We'll definitely be back!

I have been wanting to try this place for a while, but don't drive out that way often. Finally went yesterday, as I had a car appointment in the area. I tried the Spike (kraut, mustard, and New York onions in sauce) and fries. The dog was great, though much spicier than expected. I was hoping for the onions in sauce that they actually serve out of the carts in NYC, and these were different but very good. I didn't care for the fries - they had way too much seasoning and were too salty to eat. I left most of them in the bag. I talked my significant other into coming back today... I tried the Bulldawg (chili dog) and sweet potato fries and both were amazing. Best chili dog I have ever had! My SO had the dalmation, which was okay, and regular fries. The fries were better today, much less seasoning. I think the prices are very reasonable, especially compared with Dog Nuvo. I am dying to try a carrot dawg as well, as I usually don't eat much processed meat. I will be back very soon! I do wish they would get a liquor license though - sometimes a beer is the best accompaniment to a chili dog!
